Who knew that one of the most famous flowers in the history of humankind, a rose had a cousin who would equally be considered precious and important in many peoples' lives, well at least to a small extent? The Mayhaw Jelly is one of the most sought after delicacy for many. The fact that it is not easily available because of the seasonal availability could be the reason as to why it so desirable. Although it won't be fair to say that that is the only reason as to why they are popular. These are one of the best kept secret, so to speak in the history of food. And the fact of the matter is, it is available right there in the United States, and not many know as to where exactly. Created from the red berries that grow in the marshy areas, along the gulf coast, these are available only a few months of the year. April and May are the months through which they ripen and this is the reason that it is named so. They are mostly found under the hardwood tress as this is the ideal environment in the swampy and marshy areas for them to spread their roots and take charge. As the usually colors for these are red, so is it true for Mayhaw jelly. But there are exceptions. Colors are definitely an important factor to be considered when making jellies. Mayhaw jelly can be concocted in different colors too. Depending on the place from where they harvest the red berries, the ripening time also varies. In the wild where it grows unchecked, farmers take the juice of the berries and store them for making jellies out of them. But when it comes to controlled cultivation, the farmers make sure that they harvest it during the correct months to acquire from these fruits the perfect recipe for the perfect taste.
These berries have to be boiled first. This will ensure that they are tender and in due for the further processes. This is also done so that there is no bitterness when the juices are squeezed. There are many who swear by this jelly. They say that there is none better than this type. This particular plant and its fruit can be used for a variety of purposes. From making amazing jams to tasty jellies and also be made into wines! Sometimes sugars in appropriate quantities are added depending on the preferences. |
